Hit the Road, Jack!

This past weekend, was full of dancing and fun for our Miss Gretchen Rose! We let the girls choose one extra-curricular activity per year, and this year, Gretchen took tap and ballet, which, maybe her mother urged her to do, but I won't fully admit to that!

Each Monday night, I dropped her off at her dance studio and she tapped and posse'd to her hearts content. I'm going to be honest, having a daughter (or in my case 3) in dance has always been a dream. I danced all through my childhood and into junior and high school and was even captain of the dance team. I love dance, and there's a part of me that wishes I would've danced more!

I'm excited that next year, I'll have two girls in dance, which will just mean more recital craziness, but it's totally worth it!
Friday after school, Gretchen and I headed home to quickly change her into her hair and make up and her recital costume then we headed to the theater where her recital was being held.

I volunteered to be work back stage at the rehearsal, because I had to be there anyway, and thought it would be a good way to waste some time.
It was so fun being with her backstage!
Her "boyfriend's" little sister was also backstage, so the girls played and talked.
We had fun hanging out, but man, was her rehearsal LONG! We arrived at 4:30 and it was a little after 8 before we were able to leave. But, all of the girls were troopers!
Gretchen had one costume and two dances. I love that her theater company chooses to have the girls learn two dances and get to perform twice. When I was in dance, we only had one dance (either tap or ballet- even though I was in each class). Gretchen took dance before when she was 3/4, and she only had one dance too.

In order to make her costume work for both dances, the girls changed out their skirt option.
Our neighbor takes dance at the same company and we finally saw her as they were heading out the door! I loved her costume! She did a jazz dance to "It's My Party".
Grchen's class striking a pose with one of their teachers.

They have a troupe member help out with some of the younger classes, and ours did a fabulous job this year with the kids!
The studio ran the finale of the recital first, and then Gretchen's class did their tap dance and finally their ballet. They were "dolls" in their ballet performance, and applied perfectly pink cheeks.
On Saturday, I dropped Gretchen off to her dressing room, and then stood in line to grab us seats in the auditorium. Her tap number was up first.
The girls tapped away to "Hit the Road, Jack."

I am so thankful that DJ snapped these photos during the show even though photography wasn't allowed! He's a rule breaker!
After the intermission, our little doll and her class came out.
Their ballet was performed to an instrumental, and the little boy in her class was the toy shop owner, he tried to get the dolls to "work" and then they wouldn't, or so he thought, and then they did behind his back! It was so cute!
Before the finale, all of the teachers and seniors were recognized, and then the entire studio performed together.

The lobby was mad chaos because it was pouring down rain, so we squeezed our way through the crowd and I rescued Gretchen from the dressing room. We made our way over to our people, and Gretchen met Connor there.
He was so sweet to have brought her flowers!
Seriously, it totally melted this momma's heart! I really pray one day she finds a boy that treats her this well! And, if these two get married in 20 years, I won't be sad at all!

After Gretchen received flowers from her "boyfriend", her daddy gave her sparkling pink daisies.
And a few hugs and kisses too, because he cannot be upstaged by the boyfriend.
Megan's BFF from preschool performed too. Megan LOVED watching her friends on stage!

We told her that her two friends were dancing, and she was adamant that she was dancing with them!
Our happy little performer!

After the recital, we went out for pizza with the Donalds.
Gretchen and Connor sat down on one end and were so well behaved! I'm glad his momma was right across from them though!
DJ also bought Megan flowers, so we put them in a vase once we got home. Hers were purple with sparkle (her favorite color!)

The weekend was full of dancing and fun! I loved watching Gretchen perform on stage, and can't wait to have two girls up there next year!

  1. I LOVE this post! I am a "dance aunt" and my absolute favorite time of year is dance competition and recital time. I have 2 nieces and a nephew that dance. One of my nieces is just starting out and the other is a senior, and this past weekend was her final competition. I will admit I was teary eyed to watch her on that stage for the last time. I am sure that in 2 weeks at her final recital I will be a mess!

  2. The girls have so much fun at dance. I take my grand-daughter to dance each week. She is eleven and takes jazz, tap, and ballet. Her recital is June 6th.
