Signing day was last Wednesday, which means DJ had a few days off and we were able to get away. Months ago, we decided we wanted to go back to the Big Bend area and camp. We opted to take the girls out of school, take a few days off, and decided to stay a few hours outside of Big Bend, so we could visit the UT Conservatory on Davis Mountain. When 2020 hit, and we homeschooled the following year, we took this same trip and had planned a visit to the conservatory, but it was cancelled with COVID. Sigh. We had really looked forward to studying the constellations with the girls as part of their science homeschool unit.
This return trip, was the perfec time to go. But first, we had to survive a little ice storm.
Monday was a normal day, but by that afternoon they had cancelled classes on Tuesday. I did some teletherapy calls, and the girls worked on some school work.
Adalyn was bundled in her snuggie with her hot coca while she worked away.
DJ brought the camper over on Monday, because we weren't sure how bad the ice storm would be. When it happened 2 years ago, we lost power and had to sleep in the camper. We wanted to make sure it was close by just in case, but also so we could pack it for our trip, because we were determined that we were still going.
Tuesday rolled in to Wednesday, and we were off work and out of school again.
We spent the day packing, because we had planned to leave on Thursday morning. But, schools were still closed Thursday and while the roads were better, we didn't want to leave early in the morning and travle with the camper.
We opted to leave after lunch on Thursday so the roads would have time to melt. We were so thankful that it finally got above freezing.
Around 2, we were finally on the road and we were ready!
Lots of ice on the trees along the way. Thankfully the roads were clear.
Gabby did great on our road trip! She snuggled with me most of the time.
On our first day we drove just a few hours west to Fredricksburg. The drive over to the Davis Mountains is 7 hours from our house so we had already planned to break up the trip and stop in Fredricksburg. Their downtown is adorable, although they had ice too and by the time we ate dinner, all of the stores were closed. We set up the campsite for the night.
The girls immediately got out the games and a snack.
After we were set up we headed downtown to eat at Auslander's. It was essentially the only restaurant open on such a cold and icy evening.
The whole downtown was closed, but the girls wanted to stop by the candy store "just in case."
There is a Civil War museum that we took the girls to a few years ago. Of course Adalyn doesn't remember and she kept telling us that she'd like to go again.
Friday morning we were up early and headed west. I read "Layla" on the way there and finished it on our trip. Definitely one of my favorite's.
The scenery as you drive further in to west Texas is gorgeous.
We made it to our campsite around 4 and got settled in. The girls quickly saw the field and mountain behind us and went off exploring.
I eventually went on a walk. I have a goal to work out every day this year, and after sitting in the car all day, I needed to get out for a walk.
Once I came back around, the girls and Gabby, wanted to go too.
A quick little photo op on our walk.
After our walk, it was time for dinner.
We kept food pretty simple on this trip. We opted for burgers on our first night. DJ manned the grill, while Adalyn supervised.
She is a hoot.
Wile we were cooking and preparing dinner, this girl was reading a book.
A little blurry, but man we were excited to be there, despite the weather getting cooler again.
After dinner, we all decided it was too cold to stay outside There was a burn ban in affect, so no fires. I think DJ and I were saying that we ran in to burn bans more often than not and might need to invest in a different stove over our solo stove.
The girls played Blokus, we showered, and called it a day!
