Girl Mom~ Back To School Lunches

Today's Girl Mom post is all about back to school lunches! Gretchen goes back to school in a week, and I'll be packing her lunch (and mine) every day. I was so excited to pack Gretchen's school lunch when she started kindergarten! By the end of the year, the excitement had worn off, and she was eating uncrustables like they were going out of style. Today, I'm hoping to share a bit of that motivation that I had last year and regain it myself for this year.
Find my other Girl Mom posts here.
This was Gretchen's lunch the first day of Kindergarten. I bought her lunch box container from Pottery Barn Kids. It is definitely large enough to hold a variety of foods, but it didn't fit too well in her lunchbox. I had to kind of lay it on it's side. She reported that all of the food stayed in their own little compartments. I would put ranch dip in the covered compartment or occasionally leave a little piece of candy in there for her.
We also have this container from LunchBots. It is not as large as the PBK one, and I'd often have to add in a sandwich bag of something else. Or, I'd use silicone cupcake holders inside for an extra little compartment. I liked the long compartment at the front to put in wraps or roll ups.
I love this snack idea list I found on Thirty Handmade Days. I think i'm going to print it out and hang it on the fridge!
And of course, I would add in handwritten or I would print off little notes for her lunchbox! These are easy to print out and throw in the lunch box.

And, I asked Gretchen to help me and we came up with a list of her favorite lunch box goodies:
  • Turkey & Cheese Roll-ups…. to make these 'fun', I cut off the crust, roll the bread with a rolling pin to make them flat, and then roll the bread up and stick a toothpick in them to keep the bread from unrolling. We also do these with pb & j.
  • Pepperoni and Cheese with Crackers (Gretchen begs for Lunchables, so this is the solution we came up with)
  • Carrot Sticks with Ranch
  • Cucumber
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Spinach with Cheese
  • Princess Fruit Snacks
  • Cheetos- try the Pirate's Booty brand for a natural alternative
  • Raisins
  • Cheesesticks
  • Yogurt
  • Go Sandwichless! Pack a lunch full of fruits, veggies, and a grain!
  • Cherries
Where have you found lunch inspiration for this school year? What are your child's favorite foods? Do you let your child buy their lunch at school?

Comment below so we can all share in the discussion!

As always, find me every day:
