Girl Mom: Only My Meggie

It's been forever since I've written a Girl Mom post! Being a mom to three girls is a bit of a challenge, and I like to highlight the highs and the lows! I keep it pretty real, and I hope you appreciate the honesty! I think in our day and age we like to sugarcoat everything! I like to blend the good and the bad in hopes that we will all feel normal and not alone! You can read all of my Girl Mom posts here.

In February, I shared an update on my youngest daughter, Adalyn.
In January, Gretchen turned 7, and I did an update on her in this post.
This month, I'm updating on my middle- Megan.
Megan turns 4 at the end of May! It feels like yesterday, when I was left behind in Indiana with just Gretchen, and we were waiting on Megan's arrival. (When I was 6 months pregnant, DJ got a job at TU, and moved while I finished out the school year and my pregnancy- we had such good insurance that it was worth a few months apart.) Thankfully, my doctor's agreed to induction, so Megan's arrival wasn't a surprise. DJ and our parents were able to be at her birth. You can read her birth story here. And two weeks later, we made our move to Tulsa and began life as a family of 4. The transition was the most challenging of all. Going from a family of 3, then to just Gretchen and me, and then to a family of 4 was nothing short of crazy!

Thankfully, we've adjusted well! And those times are fond memories that I never want to re-experience- ha!
Megan's personality surprises me every single day. I never know what kind of mood she will be in for the day. Sometimes, I feel like I'm just treading the waters with her before fully diving in.
Megan is a mommy. She idolizes her big sister and she takes care of her little sister. Megan has always loved playing with baby dolls; she happily pushes them around in a stroller, carries them in her backpack, and sleeps with one every night. During nap time at school, she takes all of her babies, lays them around her cot, and puts them all to sleep. I wish so badly that I can see her do this!

On more than one occasion, she asks to change Adalyn's diaper and attempts to do it by herself! Thankfully, as Addy gets bigger, Megan's not so anxious to change her little sisters diapers!

Megan loves taking a baby to school or in the car with her.
Megan loves to laugh! She is the funniest little girl I have ever met! While Gretchen is serious, Megan is hilarious. She loves to smile and trick us! The other day, she was telling Gretchen that at preschool she sang "Shake It Off", Doc McStuffin's songs, and Sofia songs. Megan kept going on and on with her story, even when Gretchen became a bit jealous of the fun she had had that day!

Megan loves to make up little stories like this! She'll only tell you the truth, when you tell her that you'll ask her teacher, or if she says she's cleaned up her room, and you tell her you're going to go look. Then, she's pretty adamant that you do NOT talk to her teacher and do NOT look in her room!
We continue to have a hard time putting Megan to bed each night. When she's at school, she takes a nap, which really interferes with her falling asleep. On the weekends, we skip her nap, and she almost always falls right to sleep. When we got back from our spring break trip, she was having a really hard time falling asleep and she'd almost always end up in our bed at night. It seems to be resolving itself as she's outside more and wearing herself out by playing, and she's only in our bed every other night.

DJ tucks her in each night and reads to her from a children's Bible book. They read one story each night and they've gotten pretty far! She then says her prayers with him and then I come in later to give her a kiss, and she gives me the biggest, tightest hug. She won't let me miss coming in her room. Believe me, I've tried! If I try to skip or I come in later than she wants, then she gets up so I have to put her back in her bed.

Megan's pretty sneaky! Around Christmas, we started having food disappear. It took us a while to find the food hidden in her top nightstand drawer! I now check it often and I don't typically find food in there anymore! She probably has a new hiding spot that we haven't found!

This year at school, Megan has really come out of her shell! Last year was not her best preschool year. She had a hard time adjusting, but this year, she has the best teacher! At the beginning of the year, poor girl could barely count to 10, and now she's counting way past that, even though it's still out of order. She knows all of her letters, colors, shapes, and she can write her name and lots of other letters too! The amount she has learned this year floors me!

In my head, I thought that Megan would be behind, and I'm still concerned about it, but only because I don't have the time to work with her like I did her big sister. That's been pretty hard on me to leave her education up to school, rather than doing a lot of it myself and teaching her myself, but it's also been one of those let go and let be things. I know in the end, she'll turn out okay and she'll learn what she needs to even if the pace isn't as fast as her sister.

We have fun learning in other ways now- singing songs, reading books, coloring. Now, it's all about easy, natural learning!
Megan is not your usual girly-girl! Sometimes she insists that she's a boy just for the fun of it! She wants to wear socks with her shoes (even her sandals) and in the winter she insists on leggings and t-shirts. She doesn't prefer jeans, unless DJ tells her that all of her leggings are dirty. She is cold almost all of the time. She'll wear a jacket when it's 80 degrees outside. This girl definitely has her own fashion sense!

When we went to Disney World, we signed the big girls up for Bippiti Boppiti Boutique and I was shocked at how much Megan enjoyed being spoiled! She loves getting her nails painted at home, and she totally ate up the attention at BBB.

I was super surprised at how well she sat to get her hair fixed. She hates having her hair brushed at home, so most days it's in a pony tail, little bun, or pigtails.

Megan has never had her hair cut before. Again, this is another reason that I was shocked at how well she sat for BBB and how much she enjoyed getting pampered. We plan on getting her hair cut in the next month or so, although I'm going to miss her baby curls so much!
Megan is super shy at first! Like, I tell people how shy she is and that she's slow to warm up and she doesn't like change. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to explain to people, and they never believe me!

Megan's personality is crazy outgoing, but only when she's comfortable in the situation. It took us about two months to get her adjusted to going to preschool again (since we take the summers off), She doesn't like to talk to strangers, and even family members that we don't see often, she's uncomfortable around.

She thrives on routine and consistency. The days that her teacher is gone from school, are pretty rough. She's fine if she comes in early, but if she comes in late and the substitute is there, then she's not happy. Thankfully, her teacher now gives her warnings, and it's helped so much!

She hates loud noises. She use to be terrified of blow dryers in public restrooms and motorcycles, but she's coming around. She still doesn't like fire trucks or if our smoke detector accidentally goes off when we're cooking.

This girl is my world (along with her sisters). I was honestly terrified to have a "middle" child. I don't ever want her to feel left out or alone or forgotten about. Thankfully, she's adjusted pretty well and we are crazy about her!

  1. She's sounds like the best middle child! I had to laugh BC my daughter tends to want to wear socks with all shoes too! And is also always cold. I love how all children are different and bring something unique to each family!
