So, I'm not sure about y'all, but the toys are beginning to explode all over my house now that the holidays are over. I hear all the time from moms, that they need help organizing their kids toys, and I feel ya!
Over the years, I've tried to perfect our toy storage, so we don't end up in a state of complete chaos. I mean, I'm sort of a neat freak, so when the toys are out of control, then my house looks out of control, and then I feel out of control.
We really try to keep Christmas on the low key, but with presents from Santa, mom and dad, and then grandparents, the toys inevitably are everywhere. Today, I'm sharing some clever ways to get organized and manage the clutter in your girls' (or boys') bedrooms! (Or in their playrooms!) Because let's face it, organizing toys is such the life of a #girlmom
Tip 1: Before the holidays, have your child choose three toys to donate. Throw away any drawings, loose paper, used notebooks, or other trash. I usually throw things away when the girls aren't around. It just makes it easier and cuts out on their whining, but I definitely have them help choose a few toys they haven't played with that we can either consign or donate.
Tip 2: Have a designated spots for specific toys around your house.
I made the girls a little kitchen corner in our living room. They have all of their play food, cooking toys, and their little play kitchen and table in this spot. They know that all of their play food has to stay here.
The girls love to hang out in their kids corner. They play here with their baby dolls, they do their arts and crafts here, and they eat dinner here. We've made lots of memories in this little spot.
Tip 3: Just like you've designated toy spots around your house for specific toys, do it in your kids bedroom too.
I mean, it's really a no-brainer- right? We have to help our kids stay organized, and I do this by using extra shelves and canvas bins. When we had a play room, we bought this ClosetMaid Cubeicle, and now it's found a new home in Gretchen's room. We also purchased several of these storage drawers to use and each drawer has toys of a specific theme. She has one for her build-a-bears, one for her princess toys, and one for her American Girl doll outfits and accessories. I love that the drawers come in different colors so you can coordinate with your child's bedroom. We bought these to match our playroom, and we'll be upgrading to more cohesive colors since we are redecorating Gretchen's bedroom.
And since Gretchen likes to play with legos, we bought this storage brick to contain all of the pieces.
Tip 4: Teach your child what toys go in each bin. I have tags that I use to use for the girls- I labeled the bins with pictures or with words. You can also have your child help you organize and sort the toys in to each bin.
For Megan's room, I use this toy organizer. She still has a lot of toys on her floor because she mostly has larger toys. But, this organizer is perfect for all of her smaller toys and pieces. Megan is a huge Doc McStuffins fan, so all of her Doc toys are on the top, so they're easy to reach and put away.
We use a larger canvas bin for all of her stuffed animals.
This tote is super cute and perfect for stuffed animals!
This would be another cute option! I love that it has a drawstring closure to help hide toys away.
Tip 5: Separate their room in to zones. Gretchen has her Barbie Dream House in one corner of her room, her books are in a separate location, and her dress up is in the closet.
Megan has dress up in her closet as well. When we moved, we cleaned out their dress up, and got rid of any dresses that were tattered and torn. She also has a basket in her closet to hold any necklaces, hats, or extra shoes.
I hope this post has helped you give you some ideas if you're struggling in that area! I really think that if we give our kids a space of their own, help them feel proud of their rooms, and organize it in a way that makes sense, our kids will feel better about their space and be more helpful when it comes time to clean up!
I'd love to hear how you're organizing your kids toys and bedrooms! Feel free to share below!
