Happy Tuesday friends! I took yesterday off from blogging and enjoyed the much needed 3-day weekend and break from the outside world! Today, I'm back, linking up with Andrea for her Show & Tell Tuesdays linky party!
Today, I'm sharing all of my Momfessional moments! You know, those times that I hang my head in shame, and realize that I will do anything to just survive these years of having three kids under the age of 7. 7, 4 1/2, and 2 1/2 to be exact. Three precious little girls, which, let's be honest, wear me out! I'm pretty tired most days, and survival mode kicks in strong, especially during football season when DJ is away 98% of the time!
But, let's face it, the season is over, and I am trying to break free from my survival habits, which feels so impossible many days. So, here they are. My confessions. My momfessional moments. My lows among lows.
As you know by now, Megan does not nap at preschool. She prefers to stay awake and watch the movie playing, and then she crashes on the way home, after talking my ear off for about 10 minutes. I totally know the game plan, because we get in the car (some days after she throws an epic battle of wills because she didn't hug her teachers good-bye, Gretchen beat her to the car, or she forgot to pick up 4 coloring sheets instead of 3). She then preceeds to talk without taking a breath for 10 straight minutes. She finally gets quiet, and the next thing I know, she's sleeping. By the time she falls asleep, I'm usually pulling in to Addy's daycare, where I'll let Gretchen stay in the car with Megan. I lock the doors, turn the automatic start on, and go in to quickly grab Adalyn. If she hasn't fallen asleep by the time we pick Adalyn up, she's usually asleep 5 minutes afterwards. The drive home is so peaceful. I treasure it. I don't have the heart to wake her up (okay, that's a lie) but when we get home, and she's still asleep, Gretchen, Addy, and I sneak out of the car, close the garage door, leave Megan's car door open, leave the garage door that comes in to the house open, and I let her sleep. I may or may not have left her out there for around an hour a time or two. I'm able to get backpacks cleaned out, dinner started, dishes put away, some light house work. I mean, it's pretty amazing having a little more quiet time with just two kids! When she wakes up, she's pretty grouchy (I probably would be too), but those little snippets of time, are just perpetually easier.
When we went on our bowl trip this year, we had to be on campus by 6:30. We woke the girls up, put them in the car, headed to football, and then to the airport. We landed in Shreveport and the girls still had their pj's on until we were very settled in the hotel room. I totally wish I could've stayed in pj's too!
There are days where I just cannot fight their outfit choices. Megan is usually the one that isn't pulled together. I think at age 4, she pulls it off pretty well. I mean, she's kind of that quirky middle kid, so it works. Although, I learned my lesson when she wore this outfit on class picture day this year! I was horrified when I dropped her off realizing she was in black leggings, a black tee, and a soccer shirt with brown boots and her dirty hair in a pony tail on picture day! And, without a bow. My girls almost always wear a bow. I mean, it was tragic!
Oh, I kid, I kid. Slightly embarrassing, but not tragic!
Addy may or may not wear shorts in December. I mean, at least she has on pants. #win
And Megan will totally wear ensembles like this. This summer she lived in leotards and bathing suits.
And, when DJ is away, we have sleep overs and the girls get to act a little cray-cray!
It's a total win when she has undies on. Going pants-less is pretty common around here for the littles.
Okay, so what else........
I lock myself in the pantry to have a piece (or two) of chocolate. That way the girls don't see me.
I linger in the bathroom as long as possible.
If I hear the girls running toward my bedroom while I'm in the bathroom I lock the door as fast as I can.
The girls ate McDonald's for dinner last week only because the had Shopkins in their Happy Meals. DJ was out of town and I didn't have to cook dinner.
One reason I have a goal to walk/run 1,000 miles this year is so I can get out of the house. It helps to have 45 minutes to an hour of just being out and letting DJ deal with the crazy.
I'm often running late because I spend too long catching up on blogs or facebook in the mornings. DJ is starting to catch on to this.
I mixed peanut butter and jelly in a large bowl and keep it in the fridge. This way, I just grab the bowl, spread the mix on the bread, and the girls have sandwiches for their lunches.
I do meatless lunches once a week, and give them a cereal bar with fruits, veggies, and a little snack in their lunch boxes, just so I don't have to fix a sandwich.
We keep uncrustables for those nights when I don't want to fix a lunch.
My girls eat PB & J too much during the week for lunch, but they like it and it's easy.
Megan will find excuses to say "potty words" and I think it's kind of cute. Like, she'll say PP&J, just so she can say pee-pee. She'll say, "Mommy, my baby said stupid, we aren't allowed to say stupid are we?" She's also muttered "damn it" pretty appropriately on a time or two. I may be at blame for that one.
I've had to threaten to ground Gretchen from reading. She loves to read and is reading on a 4th grade reading level, but she often gets her nose stuck in a book and gets distracted and won't do anything else. Or, she'll try to read her book while getting dressed in the morning, which makes it take twice as long (see above where I'm always late for reading social media in the am). I have literally had to threaten to take away books just to get her to move!
We don't play outside often, because it's freezing and I'd rather not be subjected to the cold.
When we get home from school, the coloring pages that Megan brings home and most of the artwork goes straight in the trash. When the girls find it, I deny putting it there.
My girls get a package of fruit snacks as soon as we get home in the evenings. It helps distract them while I try to put things away and get dinner started.
The girls bathe every other night. They should totally bathe each night, but ain't nobody got time for that.
When I hear the dog in the middle of the night, I'll kick DJ under the covers and pretend I'm sleeping so that he has to take the dog out.
I also kick him when his alarm goes off in the morning.
I sleep with an eye mask on, so you don't really know if I'm sleeping or if I'm awake.
More often than not, I make DJ shower first so I can sleep a little longer.
Some days I "forget" to set something out for dinner, just so I have the excuse to not cook.
Whew, it feels good to get some of those off my chest!
Now, because I feel like I need to enter in a little disclaimer: Being a mom in today's world is exhausting. Between putting our best foot forward on social media, the unrealistic expectations we have from pinterest, and all trying to win at life, mom's today have it pretty rough. At the end of the day, my children are loved. They are well cared for, and I'll start saving now for their therapy, since I'm banking on their college being free. And, I do moderate comments, so if you're going to be ugly, #byefelicia
Oh Elaine!!! I loved this whole post but your disclaimer was the best!!
ReplyDeleteLove your disclaimer! The best!!:)
ReplyDeleteI found your blog a while ago from Andreas and love reading. My husband also works in college athletics, so I can definitely relate!
ReplyDeleteI keep a bowl of mixed pb&j in the refrigerator too! That is the only way my girls will eat it and its much easier to mix a lot at once and keep it on hand. I thought for sure I was the only one that did this!
