Girl Mom: A Football Life

If you've been reading this blog for any length of time, you'll know that one of the most important part of our family is my hubby's job. He's a collegiate football video coordinator, and most people don't even know that that's a "thing". I had no idea what that meant or what he did when I met him. In fact, I'm still not 100% sure. But, I do know that his job has made our family what it is. What we are. And, it's influenced us, more than we will ever know.

I first met DJ my first year of grad school. It was the beginning of football season. That year, we spent many late nights hanging out at the football office so he could work and we could be together. We even went to a bowl game on our honeymoon. Yes, the day after we got married, we flew out to Lafayette, La, so he could spend the next few days working for our college football team at their first trip to the New Orleans Bowl.

Since then, he's worked at four universities. In 9 years of marriage, we've lived in 4 states, and in 8 houses. Gretchen has lived in 4, Megan has lived in 3, and Adalyn, just 1.

You see, because of football, our family dynamics are very different. I spend many days explaining to neighbors, and even close family members that my husband is away at work 12-14 hours a day. Especially during football season. Our season ended over a month ago. You'd think that when the games ended, so would football season. But, that is so far from the truth.

We are now full swing into recruiting. Thankfully, my husband does not have to go on the road to recruit players; he's too busy in the video office breaking down their film, and even preparing for next season!

After recruiting comes spring ball, followed by high school camps, and come August, we say our good-byes until December. He has gone several days without even seeing our girls awake. Gretchen even thought that the football office was daddy's "house".
I definitely do not regret or second guess his job choices. I have told him over and over again- wherever you need to go, let's go. I have faith that God will always put us with people, a team, and in a community that we need to be at exactly the right time. If God wants us to move, it will happen.
November 30th was a tough day for our family this year. We saw it coming, I think deep down we knew, but we didn't want to know. You see, our head coach was let go. I spent the day explaining to my co-workers, that that also meant that all of the coaches were let go as well. When the head coach is essentially fired, so is everyone else.

We spent two and a half weeks in a waiting game. A holding space. Not knowing what was going to happen to our family and if God would choose to place us somewhere else.
I shed tears knowing that the ladies that had become my friends, and even more so, my family, would no longer be a short distance away. But, that many, will be moving across country. Their husbands would be struggling to find jobs. Making phone calls, going on interviews, and praying that God would find them a job. And fast.

You see, us football wives, have a unique bond. For we are the only people who truly get the lives that our husbands lead. The life they were called to serve.
The day before our 9 year anniversary, we were told that DJ would be retained! We would not be moving or scrambling to find a new job!
The news was sweet. Bittersweet, but albeit, sweet. In four years, we have grown to love Tulsa. I couldn't imagine leaving, and worse, I couldn't imagine being told we HAD to leave.

My heart aches for our coaching friends who are scrambling to find jobs right now.
As for our family, I couldn't imagine us living a "normal" life. Hands down, DJ loves what he does. I 100% support the job he has chosen. The life that WE have chosen.
Don't get me wrong, there are rough times. The times that he's not there for the little things- the parent/teacher conferences, the girls' "firsts", or when I have to tell him funny stories from the day that I know he would have loved to witness first hand.
I am late to work almost every single day. I have to get three girls dressed and to school. He helps when he can, and those times when he's home, when he helps, they make my day! I don't take for granted when he's able to stay home 5 more minutes, or come home 5 minutes early!
During our 2 1/2 week waiting period this month, he was able to take the little girls to daycare every day, and oh, it was heaven! I was able to leave for work with a clean house! I was on time! And, we've been able to have family dinners again! It makes me fall in love with him all over again! Seriously, it's the little things.
Our girls love their daddy. They love being around football! Football, touchdown- are among their first words! They even know the "touchdown" signal, and I'll never forget when we were sitting at an end of the year football banquet, and someone said "touchdown" in a prayer and Gretchen through her hands up and we all laughed in spite of ourselves!
These girls are going to know more about football than their husbands! If i'm honest with myself, I know that we will eventually move again; I'm worried at how it will affect the girls, but the other coaches kids I've been around- those in high school, college, or even grown up- they're such wonderful people; they're so well adjusted, and they are so close to their parents. I know it's because of football. And, when they get upset that we're moving them again, I know that they'll adjust, and I know that they'll be better people for it. I know that football is their way of life. It already is.
Over the last week, I've caught myself being excited for football season to begin again in August! I am excited for our new head coach, and for the families that will become our family. I can't wait to see what we'll have in store.

Always, TU Blue.

Weekend Wrap-Up: Fall Break Addition

So, this post was suppose to go up on Monday, but I got majorly sick with the flu, and Monday and Thursday are sort of the same day, so you're getting our weekend wrap up addition today. Just go with it.

Last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, I had parent/teacher conferences at school. The little girls still had daycare on Wednesday, so off they went, and Gretchen went with DJ to the football offices. We actually had her parent/teacher conference at 8:15, and he didn't leave my school with Gretchen until 9;15, so they probably made it to the football office around 9:45. He texted me at 10:30 asking when I got off, because he wasn't getting any work done! I just laughed because really. He had her there all of 45 minutes before she was completely driving him crazy! All day every day; welcome to my life!

Thankfully, I was able to leave at 11, and I headed straight to pick her up. She had earned a "purple day" at school which means that on ONE perfect day this year, she needed NO reminders about her behavior. Because of her purple day, she earned a coupon for a free pizza buffet at CiCi's.
So, we went there for lunch and y'all she enjoyed it! I on the other hand, not so much. I don't care what anyone says or how cheap it is, CiCi's pizza is disgusting. They deliver it to our schools on Friday for pizza day and a student found a hair in her pizza last year. I found a hair on my pizza last Wednesday. Um, no thank you. I had completely lost my appetite and if she ever earns a coupon there again, then DJ will have to take her.
After pizza, Gretchen and I went to see Boxtrolls. I have never seen this girl eat so much popcorn in my entire life! Boxtrolls was really cute; just creepy looking characters, but a really cute story line.

After our movie, we went to pick up the little girls from daycare.
We went home and got out the sidewalk chalk and all played outside until it was diner time.
I died when I saw Adalyn and Megan in our little battery operated car together. (even though said car has been out of batteries for two years now- we really need to buy a new battery.)
After dinner, it was bath time, and Addy Pearl was so fussy! Every one swears she's the happiest baby, and while she is, she can throw a fit with the best of them. (Best of them meaning her two older sisters.)
I declared Thursday a stay home to majorly clean house day. I think I ended up getting about half done of what I needed to accomplish.

I had Gretchen try on her Halloween costume that we had been gluing cotton balls to all week long! I had finally finished gluing on over 200 cotton balls and decided she needed to try it on before I finished the arms and the pants for her Lambie costume. At this point, she declared she hated it and didn't want to be Lambie anymore.

And, this is why we will always wait until the last minute from here on out.
She spent the rest of the afternoon choosing her own costume out of her dress up closet.
Megan and Adalyn spent some time playing doctor and patient.
Megan wanted to check my heart beat too.
On Friday we ran errands and the only picture I took was of my bracelets! My arrow is from Stella & Dot, the cross is from Charming Charlie, and the leopard hair tie is yours free with purchase from Honey Pie Accessories.

The girls and I headed to Hobby Lobby to pick up supplies to make Adalyn's halloween costume. Then we went to the mall since Gretchen changed her mind for her costume. She decided to be Elsa, so we went to the Disney store. We had lunch at the mall, and ran into some friends who had just had a new baby girl! It was so good to see them! After lunch we went to Sams Club, and by that time, I was beat, as were the girls. So, we headed home for naps.
After naps, the big girls got dressed up for a knights and maidens birthday party. Gretchen chose her Sofia dress, and Megan chose a cupcake dress.
Adalyn really enjoyed her pizza and cupcake!
It was such a beautiful evening and all of the kids played outside.

I had been talking to DJ about buying the girls a trampoline for Christmas. Sam's Club has this one, and our friends happened to have it in their yard. I told Gretchen to jump on it so I could get a perspective if she was too big, and she definitely is.
Saturday was TU's homecoming game, and we were up bright and early to get ready. Addy Pearl was fussy again, so I distracted her by taking her picture.
Here's Megan waiting for kick-off before we head in to the offices.
And, Addy Pearl. I had totally forgotten her jacket, and it was colder than I expected, so I wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

Aren't her pigtails to die for!
I wanted a picture of the big girls before we headed inside, but neither was willing to cooperate.
After half time, I took the girls out to choose some candy. Megan's favorite right now is Skittles because her preschool teacher will reward them with a few!
And, for the first time ever, we were able to catch Captain Cane at a football game! Because we always watch the game from the football offices, we never see him, and I've never been able to get a picture of the girls with him. Megan ran up to Captain Cane and was so excited, and then she became frightened and wouldn't take her picture with him. But, I was so proud of Gretchen, because this is the very first time she has ever had her picture taken by herself with our college mascot!
The girls were troopers during the game. None of them had naps, and Adalyn was so excited tos ee her daddy. This is how he worked on game film!
I woke up feeling like my allergies were bugging me on Sunday morning, but we decided that we needed to take the girls to church. Adalyn wore a dress that was mine when I was a baby. Her big cousin wore it on her 1st birthday and both of her big sisters have worn this dress too.

After church, Megan kept repeating her Bible verse, "God helps me do big things." and we went home for lunch and naps. Gretchen and Adalyn fell asleep, but Megan refused and played in her room quietly.

I was starting to feel a bit worse, and took my temperature. I didn't have one, so the girls and I headed out for our final Bible study with the coaches wives. Once we arrived, I felt worse and we went home as soon as it was over. I had a temperature when we arrived home, and told DJ that he needed to come home ASAP. Thankfully, this weekend is our bye-weekend, so DJ has been able to leave work earlier than he usually does.

He took the little girls to school on Monday and Tuesday, and I took Gretchen each day and rounded up the girls each afternoon. DJ came home and took over care for the girls while I just layed there. I'm the worst patient ever. I hate being sick. I tried to make it to work on Tuesday morning because we had a parent meeting, but I knew I would have to leave after our meeting. There was no way I could make it all day. I ended up working on Wednesday and i'm hopefully on the mend and praying that no one else in our house will get sick. Although, Megan keeps telling me that she's going to get sick on Friday. I have almost zero sick days left so hopefully we will all stay well, at least through the end of football season!

And, this is just in, but Matilda Jane is on Zulily today!!! This never, ever happens; if you're wanting MJ in your life, today is the day! They even have MJ for moms! (Y'all, I live in their MJ Finn's!) You can shop HERE.

TU Wives Trip

I took the day off work last Friday for our annual TU wives trip. The wives are invited to every away game if there's room, but once a year, the team has an annual wife trip that is reserved specifically for us and we all look forward to going!

DJ took the girls to daycare so I had extra time at the house to pack and try to clean up! I never get it all accomplished, but I was on time and most everything was done so that's a win in my book!

Once I arrived at the stadium, lunch was waiting, and then we boarded the bus to head to the airport.

All of the wives go through security first, and then the team and our husbands arrive. The team charters a plane, but we still take off from our local airport and we still have to go through security. We don't have to check our bags or anything, they just get them on the plane for us.
I laughed, because you'd think that the team could just relax before getting on the plane, but one of the radio announcers came over to DJ and asked him to burn a copy of something, so DJ pulled out his computer and got everything finished before we had to board the plane.
We are finally on the plane and headed toward Philladelphia! It was about a three hour flight, so DJ downloaded a movie to his ipad that we watched on the plane.

Once we landed, we boarded the buses and headed to the team hotel. I went up to the room to relax while DJ went to set up meeting rooms. I saw him for about 10 minutes.

That evening the wives headed out for dinner. We drove past the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. By the time we had arrived, everything was closed so we weren't able to actually see anything.

We had dinner at an Italian restaurant downtown and it was amazing! We shared appetizers, a bottle of Moscato, Ceasar salad, and I had the lobster ravioli and then we splurged on dessert!
I had cream filled pastries that were covered in chocolate. Delish.
These browstowns were right across from the restaurant, and in my future life, I might actually live in one. Seriously, they're super cute!

I convinced our "tour guide" who actually just works in the atheltic department, to take us to the Rocky steps. I knew that while on our trip I wanted to see the Liberty Bell and the Rocky steps.
I think it was about 9:30 when we got there so all of my pictures turned out horrible. We took a group pic, which didn't make it into the post, and then most of us ran up the steps.
I was exhausted at the end. I need to workout more. Way more.

This is Karen. She has come to my rescue so many times over the past few years. She's babysat the girls, let us crash in her husbands office during games and is just the best person who literally acts like she doesn't have a care in the world. Seriously, nothing ever bothers her.
And me at the top of the steps!

As soon as we got back to the hotel I crashed. DJ took his students out to eat Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches and then they were able to drive around and got out to look at the Liberty Bell and they went to the Rocky steps too.

Our game was at noon, so we had to get up and out of the hotel early. We boarded the buses around 9:15 and took off to the stadium. I think DJ left the hotel at 8, so I saw him for about 5 minutes that morning.

Once we arrived at the game, the team went into their locker rooms and the wives headed over to the baseball stadium and their restaurant for an alumni brunch.

It was rainy and cold and we had to walk about 1/2 a mile to get to the baseball stadium, and then back to the Eagles stadium for the game.

We were held up in security, because we had brought our purses that were too big according to the NFL rules. They ended up making an exception after checking and tagging our bags, and we missed the coin toss. I even brought my smallest cross body bag, seriously, it's smaller than a piece of paper, because most schools do have a bag size rule, and my bag was deemed too big!
DJ managed to get an extra press pass for me and I was able to sit in the press box during the game. I was warm and I got to see my hubby work and watch the game, and I was happy.

I don't think anyone realizes what goes on behind the scenes of a football game. Most people think it's just the players and the coaches, but y'all, there is so, so much more. There were mabye 50 people in our area and the most mono-tone announcer I've ever heard, but it's not about excitement and cheering behind the scenes. Everyone is keeping stats, updating their schools web pages, and my hubby was breaking down the game film.
This is his little set up. At the end of each quarter, one of his students pick up the film, which is recorded on little camera cards. He sticks them into his computer and then does a rough cut of the game. He gets to watch the 1st and 3rd quarter, but the rest of the time he's busy working on film. The coaches want their film ready to watch as soon as they board the plane, so that's his job. Thanks to technology, he's able to make that happen.
After the game, we were in a hurry to get downstairs and catch the buses. We ran by the Philadelphia Eagles locker room and I had to snap a quick selfie. Please pardon my rain drenched, now dried hair.

I boarded the bus and could pick up an after game meal if I wanted. The team had philly cheesesteak sandwiches so I passed.

Once everyone was back on the buses we headed to the airport. When the team leaves, we go through a private terminal and a very quick security screen and then we get on the plan where another pre-game meal is waiting on us.

DJ had a film crises before we took off, but he managed to work his magic and get it fixed not long after we were in the air.
It was cold, dark, and rainy when we left, and then I looked at my window to the sun shining and a sky full of fluffy white clouds. I love these glimpses of heaven.
We landed back in Tulsa around 8:45 and I headed home to my girls!

My mom and grandma came up and kept the girls and they did a few projects in my house that i'll share later this week!
Sunday morning we took the girls to church. I realized how unprepared we are for cold weather, because Gretchen's only "church" shoes were her sandals.
And, Addy Pearl has a closet full of shoes, but none of them fit her, so she had to wear her sandals too. Her foot needs to grow fast.

After church we came home for lunch and I put Adalyn down for her nap.
The big girls and I worked on making Gretchen's halloween costume.

Can anyone guess what she'll be? We ended up gluing 200 cotton balls on a long sleeve turtleneck yesterday, and i'm sure we have about 600 more to go to complete her costume.
After Addy woke up, she and Megan played with a box. Best toy ever. Adalyn sat in the box and Megan pushed her around a dozen times.
We didn't have our Sunday night Bible study, so the girls had cheese quessadilla for dinner. We watched gymnastics on t.v. and I tried to do some cleaning.

I have a 2 1/2 day work week this week and let me tell you, I'm totally looking forward to a long weekend!
