It's Friday!

Friday is here and the girls and I have survived the week! Adalyn is also three weeks old today, and I'd like to say that we are getting a routine established, but I honestly can't. Some days are good days while other days, she won't let me put her down, which means that not a lot gets accomplished. 

Since the girls and I ran some errands on Monday, I decided that Tuesday would be a stay home day where I could get some house cleaning done. 

Adalyn wore cloth for the first time. She's 8 lbs, which is typically the starting point to most cloth diapers, and I decided to start with prefolds and covers. I kind of forgot that they're a pain, and part of me is thinking that disposables would be so much easier for the third baby, but we have a huge cloth stash, and my hubby might kill me if I wanted to sell them all after begging to buy them all! I'm hoping it gets easier as she gets bigger..... I also adjusted all of our one size diapers down to her size, and i'm putting those on her because they're so much easier than the prefolds. 

I'm kind of easing into cloth right now, and putting cloth on her for a few diaper changes a day, and then at night she's in disposables, or when we are out of the house, she's in sposies. 

I'm also too cheap to buy another package of newborn diapers. Babies grow out of them so fast, that I don't want to buy a huge package and then have tons left over and have no use for them.

DJ and I were helping G clean her room one night, and found baby Rapunzel.... with a beard and mustache. Apparently, Megan found an ink pad and rubbed it all over Rapunzel's face. I wish I could say that i've taken the time to try to clean it up, but I haven't. 

I kind of look the bearded baby look on her.

I had a few errands to run on Wednesday, so I decided it would be my first day running errands with all three girls in tow. 

I ended up sleeping later than I had planned, so we didn't get out of the house until almost 11! It took me about two hours to get everyone dressed and ready, including myself.

The trip started off rough with Gretchen, but thankfully, she straightened up, and Megan did so good with holding hands and "touching the car" while I put Addy's carseat in the car. 

We ran to the bank after my two quick errands (seriously, it took us about an hour), and Adalyn started to cry, and I knew she was getting hungry. As we left the bank, Megan said, "I want french fry!" because apparently she thought we were at a drive through restaurant. So, we went to Sonic, because it was time for lunch and I knew that if I drove home, I'd have a hungry baby and two hungry big girls that would have to wait on their lunch until their little sister was fed. 

We pulled into Sonic and I took Adalyn out of her seat, ordered, fed her, and then our food came. G was so helpful and gave MC her food, and then she took her food and we all managed to eat and not make a huge mess. 

When we got home, I put MC down for her nap, sent G to her room to play, and I fell asleep on the couch while Addy slept in the swing. She woke up and I snuggled with her some more as she fell back to sleep.

Thursday was another stay at home morning day. G and MC played so well together; it makes my heart happy to see them play and get along.

Adalyn conspired against me when it was time for me to get a shower, but I finally managed to get her to sleep, so I could shower and get dressed. 

Thankfully, I started getting dressed early in the day, and just managed to get dressed in shifts. I took a shower, took care of baby..... managed to get make up finished, decided to pump.... dried my hair... took care of baby.... put on clothes... took care of baby.... MC woke up.....

I put this cloth on Addy, because it velcro's and I figured it would give a more snug fit... she just looked so cute while I was feeding her that I had to snap a pic. 

MC got in some snuggles while she held Adalyn for a bit.

Thursday night was Football 101 at the University of Tulsa. Even though we are entering our third season with Tulsa, this is the first time that I was able to attend Football 101. 

Most universities put on a ladies clinic and give a run down of what exactly football is, how it's played, what the jargon is, and what the abbreviations stand for. 

I got a babysitter for G and MC and took Adalyn with me. We were served dinner and listened to all of the coaches talk about what positions they coach.

Here's my hubby..... DJ is in charge of all the video for the football team, and the room where Football 101 was held, has been totally revamped this summer for team meetings with new projectors, screens, lighting, computers, etc. He's able to operate everything with a few touches on the iPad, and I must say that while i've seen the bits and pieces come together over the last few weeks, I was very impressed as I sat and watched him turn the lights up and down and operated the screens just by touching a few buttons. 

We also watched the hilight video that he made, and Coach B spoke very nice words about DJ and the hard work that he puts into his video so the coaches and players have film to review. 

He was working until 11:00 pm Wednesday night, and he honestly hasn't seen G and MC in two days, and I know I give him a hard time about working so late, but he's so good at his job and he loves it.

It's only noon on Friday, while i'm writing this, but this morning the big girls let me sleep until 9:30! I was shocked when I rolled over and realized how late it was! I kind of felt bad because while G was happily entertaining herself, MC was still in her room (playing) but not able to get out and neither girl had had breakfast! I jumped out of bed, got MC and fixed both of the girls french toast and managed to pump before Adalyn woke back up. Today's going to be another stay home day. I have laundry to put away and more laundry to wash. The dishes had to be done, and hopefully I'll be able to run the vacuum cleaner and mop the kitchen floor. Other than that, it's going to be a lazy day and I couldn't be more happy about that!

Cloth Diaper Changing Set Up

I wanted to share my cloth diaper set up, because it seems that we all have such a different way of setting up our areas. And, it's fun to see how others have organized their area to gain ideas of how you might be able to change your area to be more functional. MCs furniture is sort of a hodge podge, we're using a desk that my father in law made for my husband when he was a boy. It's the perfect height for me, and I wish I would've thought of it when G was a baby! I placed a changing pad on top, which left enough room for a wicker basket. In this basket I place all of my all in one and pocket diapers that are already stuffed with inserts.

In the drawer, I keep my cloth wipes as well as extra hemp inserts, and my reusable liners in case MC develops a rash.

On the right side of the desk, is the 'book space'. I've placed a storage container that holds my prefolds and covers. When I want to use one, I just pull the basket out. I also keep a box of wipes there, just in case I need any of those.

Underneath the desk I have a large wicker basket that serves as a laundry basket.

I also have a trash can that has a wet bag liner inside. For now, it is open air. I don't notice a stench, but DJ occassionally does. I do have a trash can that I need to clean out that will eventually replace this open can.

I know that as MC gets older and begins to crawl and pull up that i'll have to reorganize a few things. But for now, this works very well for us.

Sunning Cloth Diapers

Beware: Dirty Diapers ahead!

If you use cloth diapers, you're aware that your babies poo can and probably will stain them. We have a diaper sprayer that i'm hoping will help prevent some of the dreaded staining, but my husband isn't a
plumber, and he's not comfortable attempting to hook it up until someone is here to help them (AKA: his dad) So, until his dad visits in September (fingers crossed) it looks like i'll have more stains than I'd like.

So, now I get to figure out how to get the stains out. DJ told me that I should bleach the diapers, which I've heard you can do. But, then I was warned by a fellow fluffy mommy, that it caused her child to have a diaper rash. Hoping to prevent that, I opted for a more natural way to remove stains: the sun.

So, here's how I did it.

First, run your diapers through a cold quick rinse. I did this because I don't have the sprayer, and I wanted to remove the poo. Remember, breast fed poop is water solluable, so there really is no need to rinse before you start the wash process. This is what a dirty diaper looked like after the cold quick wash. (I warned you there'd be dirty diapers ahead!)

Next, take lemon juice and squeeze onto the poop stains. I first started with a real fresh lemon, cut in half. But, I quickly realized that I'd need a few lemons, and I only had 2 in the fridge. So, I grabbed my lemon juice, and just squirted it on.

I threw all the treated diapers in the sink and then put them all back in the laundry basket and carried them outside.

Now, I don't have a clothesline, and with no trees in our backyard coupled with the fact that we're renting, I knew I wasn't going to get one. So again, I turned to my fellow fluff mommies and someone suggested this:

Yes, I know, turn your head sideways.... but, it's a drying rack that I picked up at Target for around $15.00. I was able to lay my liners on the top, and pin the diapers to the other racks.

Then, I left it alone for the rest of the day. They had a good 8 hours in the sun. I did have to go outside in the early afternoon, because the diapers ended up in the shade.

After they sun bathed, I brought the diapers back inside and did my wash cycle all over again. Thankfully, I have a stain cycle wash on my washer, so I use that when I'm washing the diapers.

I don't have an after picture... I know, you probably want one, but I promise that almost all of the poop stains came out. There are still a few, but they're not as noticeable as they were; it's mostly in the elastic of the diapers. And, if I had time, I'd take out the elastic in my FBs and lay them flat, but, I don't. I'm a mom of two after all, so we'll take what we can get!

Washing Your Fluff

After several weeks of using cloth diapers, I'm hoping that I'm mastering the wash process.

I need to purchase some more diapers, because I'm on a two day wash cycle right now. But, I do have about 5 diapers that MC is too little for, and two that she is growing out of.
I throw my dirty diapers in a small trash can, that has a wet bag liner. I make sure to remove the inserts when I've finished changing the diaper, and fold the velcro down (laundry tabs). When the trash can is full, I do a load.

I first do a cold wash with no detergent. I just let it run through a regular wash cycle. I just started to switch the soil level higher, because I don't have my diaper sprayer hooked up yet and because some of my diapers are starting to stain.

Once the cold wash is finished, I do a hot wash with a cold rinse and 1 tablespoon of Rockin Green detergent. My LG washer, allows me to add a second rinse cycle automatically. Sometimes, I do another rinse cycle, but it depends on the time I have.

We also just read the manual on our washer last night, and discovered that after the cold wash cycle, that I could set it to do a hot/cold wash, followed by two rinse cycles, by using a button for extra-soiled clothes. This way, i'm not keeping up with it, and it should do all of my rinse cycles automatically. I just tried this out tonight, but I'm thinking it'll work well. The downfall is that it takes an hour and forty minutes to go through this entire cycle.

After all of my washing is finished, I throw everything in the dryer. Most things have to go through two times, but not everything. The hemp and prefolds almost always do though.

When everything is dry, I throw it all in a laundry basket, and bring it to my couch where I sit and re-stuff. Then, it all goes back in the baskets by the changing table and we start all over again!

I'll admit the worst part is putting everything into the washer and trying not to breathe. For some reason, I never imagined the smell of soiled diapers. But, everything else, I don't mind. The washing process is getting easier and easier, and despite the few stains, everything is coming clean.

I will be trying to sun my diapers in the next week, so i'll let y'all know how that turns out!

The GoGreen Company sent me their "Champ" cloth diaper. The Champ is a premium one-size diaper, in which you do not have to remove the soiled insert because it's designed to come out on its own in the wash. It also features an extending size, so it will fit from birth through potty training age.

I told the company to send me whatever print they wanted, and they sent me a super soft diaper. I love the snap feature, because I know the insert is securely held in place. I also like that the diaper has an opening in the front and the back, so I don't feel like i'm shoving my hand inside the back end to secure the insert in the front end. Plus, that snap holds it in place.

I have not tried leaving the insert attached while I wash the diaper. To be honest, with how out of the loop i've been the past few weeks, it was a feature I had forgotten about. But, I wish I would've remembered, because tonight I'm pretty sure that I stuffed the GoGreen insert into another diaper! Had, I remembered, I wouldn't have the problem of a missing insert. So, once I find it, i'm going to try to leave it attached next wash cycle.

The diaper was a little tricky to figure out the correct size for MC. But, once I figured it out, it fits great! She's worn this diaper two or three times and we have yet to have a leak in it.

Our 1st Day in Fluff

I finally decided to brave it today, and put M in some fluff for the afternoon. I pulled out a thirsties cover and a prefold.

I tri-folded the prefold, and spread apart the back and the front a little bit (sort of like a 'v') in order for the prefold to 'wrap' around her. I have purchased a 'snappi', but to be honest, i'm afraid to use it. It's not as stretchy as I thought it would be, especially because the sides of the prefold don't cover M's sides, and it's sharp- I'm just afraid that i'm going to cut her with it.

So, once I got the prefold on, the cover was fairly easy to put on.

M survived one change in the cloth, and then we put a second one on her. This time, I didn't change her as soon, because she was sleeping, and we ended up having company for a little bit. I'm not sure if it's because I didn't change her soon enough or if it was the way the diaper was put on, but she managed to pee outside of the diaper and onto my shirt.

My mom changed her next while I said good-bye to our company, and she simply did a tri-fold with the diaper and placed the cover on. While I was feeding M, I could tell that the prefold hadn't completly covered her little booty, and she pooped. It stayed in the diaper, but it did get on the cover.

In all we had three diaper changes in fluff, and spent the most of the afternoon in it. I probably won't put it on her tomorrow, because we'll be out of the house, but i'm hoping to try again on Monday, and get the hang of it better throughout this week.

Prepping your Fluff

On Mother's Day I was able to spend the afternoon prepping my fluff... well, Megan's fluff, and I can happily say that it is all organized and ready for her arrival!

I promised that I would post my 'how-to's' when it came to washing and preparing your cloth diaper stash, and yes, I'm finally getting around to it.

First up.... the prefolds. As, I mentioned before, these scared the crap out of me, and other than the lengthened prep time, I'm looking forward to using these the most. In order to prep your prefolds, simply boil them in a pot of water with a drop of blue dawn. I boiled mine for about 30 minutes, but my pot only held about 3 diapers. I probably could've squeezed in 4, but I was nervous. After they were boiled, I just threw them in the sink to drain a little bit, and waited until my entire prefold stash was boiled. Then, I did one regular wash cycle with hot water and 1 tablespoon of the Rockin Green detergent, and threw them in the dryer.

I purchased non-bleach Indian prefolds from Little Lions. You can also get them from Cotton Babies for $1.00 each.

I then sorted my pocket diapers. I went ahead and washed the microfiber inserts with the diapers and pre-fold covers, but I plan on washing them seperately once they're soiled. Make sure that you secure the velcro tab covers before you place them in the washer.

First, you'll run a cold/cold wash cycle with detergent. (I used 1 tbsp. of Rockin' Green)

Next, run a hot/cold wash cycle with detergent.

Then, you'll run an extra rinse. Thankfully, I can add this on to my hot/cold cycle without adding an extra step for myself. But, you'll also want to make sure that all of the suds and bubbles are gone. If they aren't, then go ahead and run more rinse cycles.

Next, I threw everything in the dryer. I found that my covers and pocket diapers dried the quickest. I had to dry the microfiber inserts at least 1-2 more times before they were fully dry. Had it been a sunny day, I probably would've dried these outside rather than in the dryer.

Once I was finished with the washing/drying process, I sorted everything. I placed the inserts that were larger in a box to be used later (and for moving purposes), then I sized my fuzzi bunz down to their smallest setting, and stuffed each one with an insert. I also folded all of the prefolds. All of the larger diapers, went in a box as well, to be unpacked once we move.

The diapers that I plan on trying out while we are still here, are unpacked and organized in a large wicker basket.

The process wasn't as intimidating as I thought it would be. Although, it did take a good four hours of my day to prep/boil the prefolds, sort and seperate, seperate and sort again (after drying), size and stuff, and put away. I don't anticipate it taking me that long in the future.

Free & New Fluff!

I was so excited to check my mail last weekend and find two Itti Bitti diapers that I had won in their blog giveaway a few weeks ago! They are super soft and I can't wait to put them on M! The polk-a-dot diaper is a cover, so i'll be using a prefold inside of it, but I ordered it from Totsy several weeks ago and received it last week! I'm in love with the polk-a-dots on it!

I finally purchased plain blue Dawn a few weeks ago, so in the next week or two, i'm hoping to boil the prefolds and finally start prepping my stash. As of now, it's all stacked up in a basket just waiting on me.

I'm happy with our stash so far. We have about 6 covers to use with the prefolds, and I have around 16 all-in-one's (AIOs)! I'd like to get up to 24 AIOs, but i'm also wanting to wait a tiny bit longer, so i'll know which diapers are working out best for us! Although, the urge to purchase more fluff has been tempting and i'm doing my best to stay busy to avoid the online purchases!

I can't wait to use these and was so excited to share the picture of the free and new fluff with y'all!

Rockin Green: Figuring out how to wash CD's

I'm officially ready to begin prepping my stash of cloth diapers, or, so I think.

I purchased my laundry detergent from Amazon this weekend, and thanks to Swagbucks I had a $5.00 gift card, so I only paid about $10.00 for it.

The detergent claims that it will wash up to 90 loads, but I've heard that i'll actually use less detergent than what is called for.

There are many types of laundry detergent for cloth diapers. I think the big thing is that it needs to be completely additive free, because it will decrease the absorbancy of your diapers. Here's a chart that you can use to figure out the right detergent for your family. This chart also breaks down the cost per load, and according to it, I'll only be paying about .25-.30 per load, but if you figure in, my $5.00 off, it's less than that!

So, that wasn't the intimidating part, picking out the detergent we would start with was easy. Why? Because I had heard a lot of people mention this specific brand, and it was reasonably priced. I also like that I can use it in my HE washer.

The difficult part is figuring out HOW to prep my diapers. Each diaper comes with instructions, but I haven't yet taken the time to figure out how many cold rinses I do first, how many hot washes, followed by cold rinses. So, that's my plan for the weekend. What I've also found, is that each family does something a bit differently, and I'm also a bit intimidated by my HE front loading washing machine. You see, I use the same cycles for almost all of our clothes- only changing to a warm water when we wash towels or sheets. I honestly have no idea how to do a rinse cycle only. But, i'll learn, and then I'll let you know what I figure out, so maybe, it won't be so hard should you choose to cloth diaper!

Teaching G to CD

I went through my cloth diaper stash this week to figure out what I had and what we still needed. I've learned that I do not need any more inserts! I have about 30!!! Sadly, a lot of these are in a size large, but I have some pre-folds that are hopefully in the mail, and I got a steal on size small hemp inserts on Amazon the other day. So, I know I'm set with those! I only have 11 actual diapers with a few x-small covers, so I still need to add to my actual diaper stash, plus purchase our detergent. But, I think I'm almost all set! When I got these out, Gretchen decided that it would be a wonderful time for her to learn how to diaper a baby. So, she gathered all of the baby dolls she could find, along with a high chair, and a baby bed.

Obviously, we need to work on how to pick up a baby, because she likes to pick them up by the head and neck!

But, she did a great job learning how to put the diaper on.

And, she even tucked the baby in for her 'day nap'.

I know she'll be a great big sister to baby M!

Our Cloth Diaper Options

Well, it's official, my family & my husband all think that I've gone off 'the deep end'. I've chosen to cloth diaper Megan. Now, I have a lot of family and friends asking me why. So, I figured I would type a blog post that I could direct everyone to, to explain my reasons and the research that I've done myself.

So, why?
1. In the long run, it's a cheaper option than using disposables.
2. I've had experience potty training G, with that, comes poop accidents. I never heard, until recently, a parent throwing away poopy underwear. We've always just dumped it in the toilet, rinsed them, and then thrown them in the laundry. It wasn't too big of a mess with G, and I figured since we've been doing it for the last year, what's another few years with M?
3. I've recently heard and read about the new chemicals that are placed in Dry Max type diapers, and the so-called 'rashes' that babies are getting from wearing them. Honestly, I don't want those chemicals on my baby, and the chance of her getting horrible 'rashes'.

There are a few more, but those are my main reasons for choosing cloth diapers this time around rather than disposables. I also realize that my choice is not the choice for everyone else. I think it's completly overwhelming to figure out what is the best decision, and many people just think it's 'gross'. So, please remember that these are my choices alone. I'll also add that these aren't necessarily DJ's choice.

When I mentioned cloth diapers to DJ, he told me 'no'... a very stern 'no'. It was something that I felt strongly about, so I went ahead and purchased 2 diapers. He was not happy once they arrived on our door, but I was so excited to show him the diaper and convince him that they 'looked' like regualr diapers. I still don't think he's sold on the idea, but he's willing to let me.

A drawback to cloth diapers is the laundry. Yes, they do require a special detergent. But, from what I've heard, you're using less detergent so it lasts a long time. They also do have to be rinsed, and then washed, and they should be line dried. All of which are concerns, but it's a sacrifice i'm willing to make. The laundry is still an area that I'm learning and exploring, and since the cloth diaper world can be so overwhelming, it's something that I'm waiting to figure out. Of course, I can't wait too much longer!

So, after exploring the pros and cons, I started to explore the types of diapers that were available. After talking to a few other moms, I have figured out that we want to try one-size diapers, because they can grow with the baby. I am also going to use all-in-one's (AIOs) and pocket diapers. Finally, I decided to try a few covers & prefolds for the newborn stage.

So, here's what I decided with each one: Above is the Bum Genius 3.0. It's an AIO diaper, meaning I will rinse it, and throw the entire thing into the wash. It has an absorbent inside and the cover is attached. I decided to try these, because I found them for $10.00 each. These however, were not my first choice. Because they're an AIO, I feel like the outside cover can deteriorate over time since the pee & washed off poo, might get on the outside in the wash. Also, these are velcro or aplix, which, also deteriorate over time. When I received them, I didn't think they were as 'thick' as the Fuzzi Bunz that I had already received, but I'm willing to try them.

I've purchased some other AIO's, but because they're an 'off brand' I'm not going to include them in this post, as they're basically the same style.

Above: The Fuzzi Bunz pocket diaper one-size. After doing research, these are my favorite diapers. I love that they have pockets. Meaning, I can put 1-2 inserts inside the diaper to make it more absorbent as needed. They also come with 2 inserts. I'll be purchasing hemp inserts as well, as they are more absorbent, and i've made some of my own flannel inserts. Plus, the inserts can be removed and washed seperately, hoping to prolong the outside of the diaper.

I like that these have buttons and can be adjusted, and that they'll grow with the baby. Meaning, I can use from a starting weight until age 2. I also like that these have an adjustable elastic, so I can fit the leg holes on smaller or larger settings as needed.

The con that I've heard to this diaper, is that the inside fuzzes in the wash. But, they're also very soft! Another con is the cost at about $20.00 a piece.

Finally, after deciding on the above brands, I decided I would attempt to cloth diaper at the newborn stage. Above is the Thirsties cover- this is actually the Thirsties duo, but bare with me, as I'm pretty sure they're similar to the Thirsties that I did purchase.

With the Thirsties cover, you simply place a pre-fold inside the cover. Once it's soiled, you take out the pre-fold and replace it with a new pre-fold, and you can wipe off the cover if something gets on it. Pre-folds are also a cheaper option in the long run, and I'm hoping that I'll like them and can continue to use them with ease as the baby gets older. But, for the newborn stage, I've only purchased x-small Thirsties.

These do also have leg guskets, which gives an extra layer of protection at the legs to prevent leaks.

Above, you'll find the Indian pre-folds. From what I've read, these are the most cost-efficient and they're absorbent. Plus, they can be used as extra inserts in pocket diapers. Now, don't think these are like the Gerber type prefold, and the old-school cloth diapers that you have to fold and pin in place. That's why I was scared of pre-folds. You do simply fold the square into a rectangle, and that's it. After it's folded, you just place it inside the cover.

So, these weren't as intimidating as I originally thought, and at around $1.50 for the prefolds and $11.00 for the covers, it can be more cost efficient.
