Saturday was our home opener this football season! Just like every home game weekend, you'll find us at the football stadium. Our kick off was at 3, so by the time we arrived to tailgate, and stayed to visit with DJ and his students after the game, it was a full day of football!
Our band performed before the game, and marched in a fun TU formation.
And the football kids were ready to cheer with their hurricane flags in tow. This year, I'm determined to sit in the stands and enjoy the atmosphere and the game. We've almost always spent most of our time in the family suite so the girls could play (and I could concentrate on the game) but they're old enough that they can sit through most of a game and stay entertained. Plus, our stadium isn't usually crowded, so they have some room to move around.
And, sitting in the stands is a bit easier when we can just take silly selfies!
All of the girls received face tattoos before the game from the cheerleaders. In a few weeks, they'll actually get to perform with the cheerleaders on the field!
While, DJ isn't a coach, we are closely connected to football, the coaches, their wives and families. We really understand what it's like to have a husband who isn't home often, but how they try so hard to fit family time in to their busy schedules. I was so thankful this week when DJ was able to take some time off to take the girls to a doctor, so I didn't have to use a 1/2 sick day.
And earlier this week, I saw this post on Facebook, and so much of it is true, even for our girls. Football kids, can move around often. It's hard when your best friend isn't a fan of your dad's team, or when your team isn't the favorite in the state. We've lived in 4 states in 12 years, and while we've been in Tulsa for 7 seasons, we know that it's not always the norm for our football families. However, the football children I know grow in to the most resilient and strong adults that I know. And, I know that our kids will be okay if a time comes where we have to move on.
We spent some time in the family suite during half time and visited with friends during the 3rd quarter, and then made our way back to our section in the 4th quarter. Around this time, the girls decided that it would be fun to make friends with some of the fans in the stands. Adalyn started chatting up a woman a few rows in front of us, and Megan found this man. It sure does take a village.
And this is how we feel after a Tulsa Win!
So we are currently 1-1 in our season.
After the game, we hung around with DJ and his students and chatted them up about school and their excitement for the season. DJ has an amazing position to influence the lives of young college students. Many of them have gone on to be video coordinators themselves, work in athletics, or become successful in their chosen careers. We're so thankful for the students that have entered our lives, and we hope that we can have a positive impact on them as they do on us.
Here's to next weekend, and our away game at Toledo.
Reign Cane.
