West Texas Camping Day 3: Ghost Town

Hey friends! Today I'm back with another recap of our camping trip to Fort Davis, Texas. If you missed day 1 you can click here and our day 2 recap is here.
We keep our camper stocked with games, and the girls were addicted to Clue. They pulled it out whenever we had some camper time, and played a round in the mornings.
We decided to drive to Terilingua, Tx, which has a ghost town from the 1940s. It was about a 2 hour drive from our campsite, but it was a pretty drive.

There are cottages you can rent that are very southwestern feel, and you're close to Big Bend National Park.
Look at this literal boat house, parked out in the middle of nowhere!
We drove to Terilingua and our first stop was the jail! This is where you'll find the public restrooms, and the jail that was here in the early 1900s. Megan and Gretchen thought it was cool. Adalyn wanted NO part in it!
So, she took our picture! She's a pretty good little photographer!
There's a restaurant, but we arrived before lunch and brought our own picnic lunch, so the girls sat in the chairs outside.
They also thought it was hilarious!

We stopped in the general store to pick up our self-guided tour brochures, and headed over to the hotel.
You literally just walked around through buildings that are still in use today, and ruins that the miners left behind when the mine company went bankrupt.

Looking down the old mine shaft.
The scenery was unique, but beautiful. It literally felt like we were in a western movie.
This was what's left of the houses. They were literally just rocks stacked on top of each other to make a house!
We walked back up toward the hotel and over to the school. Adalyn found this old sign, and wanted her picture near it.... this also reminds me we should probably look up this person and figure out who they were!
The school house was in shambles.
It definitely would not have been safe to venture inside.
But we did see their old playground.
After we saw the school, we walked over to the church. It's still in us today, and the structure on the right is a private residence.
There was a water feature outside the building.
The inside was very simple, but there were ornate touches throughout.

I love being able to explore old architecture.
We found a local art store that originally was a house and peeped inside.
This sofa was built in to the front porch, and I'm sure it is not comfortable at all.

After exploring the art store, we had lunch at some picnic tables outside of the general store.
We also found a painted rock. The girls really wanted to keep it, but I convinced them to leave it so someone else could find it! It even had a # so we could look up the other rocks from the person who left it!
We went back to the jail for another bathroom stop, and I had to snap a picture of the old car that was just left there.
And then we went in to the general store to buy a magnet from our trip.

We are collecting magnets as we travel and adding them to the camper.

I took a picture of this old photo of the kids that use to live in Terilingua.
Megan and Gretchen took a picture of inside the jail.. I'm pretty sure we made 3 visits.

We hopped in the truck and drove down to the cemetery. Terinlingua has big Day of the Dead events here each year.
I know this is creepy, but the graves are unique. There were marked really well, or in shambles.
This collection was at the gate of the cemetery. So many coils were just scattered everywhere.
We drove back and passed some really cool landscape.
Nothing but empty roads.
Once we got back in to Fort Davis we stopped for ice cream at their general store, which is actually a restaurant and hotel. We literally would not have known that had we not ventured inside.
Love this cutie! She's always up for an adventure!
Downtown Fort Davis has a few shops, the restaurant, and hotel. There is also a snake museum, in town, but I really do not like snakes.
After ice cream, we drove to the look out point located within the campground. You could see forever.
DJ and I rested once we got back in our comfy chairs!
We grilled chicken and veggies and had fajitas for dinner!

We use this camping grill because it uses propane and folds down so it's easy to store under our camper. And I purchased this griddle top for the grill so we could make bacon, eggs, or pancakes.... but yes, it works for fajitas too!
DJ was outside messing with the hoses, and caught us inside playing another game of Clue.
We figured out this little spot in our camper gets super warm! The girls would hang out down here and get toasty before getting in their bunks for the night!

Next week, I'll recap the last day of our camping trip, so be sure to check back!
